Cein joins in the campaign for ictus prevention in the workplace
On the occasion of the Commemoration Day of the Ictus tomorrow, there was a special training session held today with the neurologist
Thirty male and female workers from the European Center for Business and Innovation (CEIN) of Navarra today participated in one of the training sessions which, Adacen, since April of last year, has been giving to companies in collaboration with the Mutua Navarra Health and Safety Insurance. As the annual commemoration of The Day of the Ictus will be celebrated tomorrow, Adacen has announced that they are about to open this campaign project to the rest of society.

With the workshop session celebrated today, Cein adopts the campaign initiated by Adacen in collaboration with Mutua Navarra in 2018. Their workers were given a talk by a professional from Adacen and they were shown a video which describes the symptoms of this affliction and which points out some prevention methods that can be adopted. In addition, in another video, three young people who have suffered an ictus while still working gave an account of their experiences.

At the end of the session, a handout was given to all the workers containing the most important information about an ictus stroke so that they can share the information with family members and others so that people can learn to distinguish when a person is having an ictus incident.

Meanwhile, Adacen announced that over the next few months the campaign would be extended to the rest of the population of Navarra by means of a widespread diffusion of informative material.

More than 1,500 workers affected by ictus this year
A total of 53 companies and more than 1500 people have participated in the sessions of detection and prevention of an ictus which Adacen, in collaboration with Mutua Navarra has given throughout this year. In addition, Adacen has announced that over the next few months the campaign will be extended to the rest of the population of Navarra by means of a widespread distribution of informative material. In total, since the initiation of the Project last year, some 90 workshop sessions have been given which were attended by some 2,500 workers from public entities and companies in Navarra. The valuation made by the companies has been very positive and many have requested Adacen to provide workshop sessions related to the theme of stress for their staff and workers.

Furthermore, Mutua Navarra has placed 1,100 posters in different workplaces as well as distributing handouts and showing the video cartoon which has been used in the talks given.

The participation of the Mutua Labor Insurance in this campaign has developed within their program “A Healthy Company”, which is trying to promote health care among the workers and companies in Navarra.
The materials in the campaign describe in graphic form the most usual symptoms that people undergo when they are suffering an ictus, and point out what should be done and what should not be done by those who are present at an ictus, as well as providing some prevention advice. The most important thing, they point out, is to call the emergency number 112 in order to active the ictus protocol, which is precisely to provide immediate and urgent treatment of this pathology as designed by the Navarra Health Service. It should be underlined that the prognosis of ictus is directly related to the time which passes between its diagnosis and the onset of adequate treatment.

Would you recognize an ictus taking place?

More than 60% of the general public would not recognize the symptoms when someone by their side is suffering an ictus. Within the remaining 40%, half of the people would not make an immediate call to the emergency services. This is the reality of the ictus, a reality, which by not getting immediate emergency treatment, might mean death for the affected person or cause chronic brain-damage from this vascular-Cerebral accident. Moreover, ictus is affecting Young people more and more while they are still at a working age. In fact it is the top cause of disability in an adult and, along with heart attacks, the main cause of death in the workplace. Each year there are some 130.000 new cases from vascular-Cerebral accidents, causing death in some 30% of the cases and serious disabilities in some 40% of the cases.

Therefore, and because some 80% of ictus cases are preventable, if people lead healthy lives, Adacen and Mutua Navarra began this campaign in February, 2018. The distribution of different materials with information on ictus and the workshop sessions with staff and personnel have been the main strategy used. In this way, workers and staff are informed on how to recognize an ictus when it occurs, the risk factors that can cause an ictus and what measures should be taken to prevent an ictus; measures that should be taken into account during all the adult life of a person.

The symptoms of ictus

The symptoms that indicate that a person could be suffering an ictus are:  An intense headache, which comes suddenly and is different to normal headaches. A loss of strength, feeling or a lack of coordination in one half of the body. Suffering total or partial loss of vision or a blurred vision. A loss of feeling in the face with difficulty in speaking or understanding if spoken to.  In the case of suffering one or more of these symptoms, it is necessary to call 112 immediately.
